THERMAL POWER PLANT

The generating station which converts heat energy of fuel like coal is called steam power plant.
A steam power plant basically works on Rankine cycle.

☞ MERITS AND DEMERITS

☆ MERITS

The fuel is less costly.

It requires less space .

It can be installed at any place

It can be installed near the load center.

Initial cost of power generation is less.

☆ DEMERITS

It causes air pollution.

It requires abandoned amount of water.

Ash causes a big problem.

The running cost is high.

☞ SELECTION OF SITE

Sufficient water :  For steam production and cooling purpose huge water is required.
Availability of fuel : Coal is the main fuel for steam production. So it should be easily available.
Land :  For installation of machineries and other equipments large land space is required.
Transportation : Since the coal is brought to the plant via rail and also equipments are brought by rail or road, so the transport system should be strong.
Location : The power plant should be located far away from populated area.
Initial Cost : At the time of erecting a steam power plant the initial cost should keep low.
